How to Find Nonprofit Board Members

Nonprofit Board Members are accountable for the assets of an organization and provide insight, oversight and foresight. They are often compared with crows perched on the crows nest, scanning for rainbows and storm clouds. While they are not in charge of the day-to-day tasks, they should be capable of seeing the bigger image and know what’s necessary to make things happen.

Whether your nonprofit organization is established or just starting out there are plenty of resources to help find good board members. One of the best ways is to use your existing volunteer base. Check out your current events and committees. Also look for people who are likely to be great leaders. You can also utilize your social media and newsletters to promote your board positions to your local community.

Find job boards such as Impact Opportunity or Idealist for nonprofits and mission-driven organizations. Additionally, search within your professional areas to find those who have connections to nonprofits through their professional associations or companies that contribute to them. If you spot a few people who seem to be suitable candidates Contact them and see whether they’re interested in serving on your board.

Just like every staff member, new board members must receive an in-depth orientation so that they are aware of their responsibilities and commitment. This includes a set of clearly defined expectations regarding meeting attendance and schedules, fundraising, the responsibilities of board members for which they are recruited (e.g. budget management) and other policies regarding governance.
